Every BaZi chart is written with just twenty-two characters — ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches, paired into the sixty combinations known as the Sixty Jiazi. Here is what each one means, in plain English.
The Ten Heavenly Stems
The ten flavors of qi.
Each stem is an element in a yin or yang form — like the same metal forged into a sword or polished into a jewel. Your day stem is your day master: the "you" of the chart.
The Ten Gods · 十神
The ten ways a character can relate to you.
Every stem and hidden stem in your chart is read against your day master as one of ten gods. They are not deities — they are ten working temperaments, each with a plain-English name below.
The Twelve Earthly Branches
The twelve animals, with the zodiac inside.
Each branch carries an animal, an element, and a season. The branch of your year pillar is your zodiac animal; the branch of your month pillar sets the seasonal weather of the whole chart.
