What is the Day Master?

Where to find it

A complete chart has four pillars: hour, day, month and year. Each pillar has a stem above a branch. Find the Day column and look at its upper character. That is the Day Master. Unlike the familiar year-animal sign, it depends on the calendar day of birth.

The ten Day Masters

The five phases—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water—each have a yang and yin expression, producing ten stems. The images below are memory aids, not boxes you must fit.

Why the label is only the beginning

Two people with the same Day Master can have very different charts. A Fire Day Master born in summer does not meet the same climate as Fire born in winter. Roots in the branches, support from Resource, outlets through Output, and pressure from Officer or Wealth relationships all change how that Fire functions.

This is why “I am Water, so I need more Water” is not a valid reading. First establish season, roots, support, drainage and control. Then ask whether an added phase improves circulation or creates excess.

How the Ten Gods arise

Once the Day Master is fixed, every other element becomes a relationship: the same element is Companion; what produces the Day Master is Resource; what the Day Master produces is Output; what it controls is Wealth; and what controls it is Officer. Yin-yang polarity divides those five families into the Ten Gods.

These names are roles within the chart, not moral judgments. “Seven Killings” does not predict violence; “Wealth” does not guarantee money. Their meaning depends on placement, condition, combinations and the question being asked.

A useful first reading order

1. Confirm the calendar conversion and the four pillars.
2. Locate the Day Master.
3. Read the month branch as seasonal context.
4. Check roots, support, output and control across the whole chart.
5. Only then translate the Ten Gods into the life topic being discussed.
