The 10 Day Masters, explained

Your Day Master is the single character at the top of your day pillar — the "self" that every other character in the chart relates to. Ten stems, ten temperaments. Find yours below.

Where the Day Master sits

Open any BaZi chart and find the day column. Its upper character — one of 甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸 — is the Day Master. Everything else in the chart is then classified by its relationship to this one stem: what generates it, what it generates, what controls it, what it controls. For the full mechanics of how that classification works, read What is the Day Master?

Yang and yin: two operating modes

Yang stems

Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren. Outward, broad, visible. Yang energy expands, leads, and spends itself openly — like sunlight or a great river. Its risk is overextension: burning out, overpowering others, or moving before the ground is ready.

Yin stems

Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui. Inward, refined, adaptive. Yin energy concentrates, adjusts, and works through subtlety — like lamplight or rain. Its risk is under-extension: over-accommodating, ruminating, or waiting too long for perfect conditions.

The ten Day Masters

Read these as temperaments, not boxes. A Day Master describes a default strategy; the rest of the chart — season, support, relationships — decides how well that strategy works.

Jia 甲 · Yang Wood — the pine tree

Upright growth with visible structure. Jia people lead by direction: they set the course, hold principles, and grow steadily toward long goals. At their best they are the person others orient around — principled, reliable, quietly ambitious. Watch for rigidity: the pine does not bend, so Jia under pressure can snap rather than adapt, turning principle into stubbornness.

Yi 乙 · Yin Wood — grass, flower, vine

Adaptive growth through connection. Yi people thrive by finding the right environment and the right allies, then climbing beautifully. They are diplomatic, aesthetically attuned, and skilled at working through people rather than over them. At their best they make any group more graceful. Watch for dependence on conditions: without good soil or support, Yi can drift, please others excessively, or struggle to stand alone.

Bing 丙 · Yang Fire — the sun

Radiance and broad warmth. Bing people are visible by nature — generous with energy, quick to inspire, happiest when their light reaches many. They warm rooms and start movements. At their best they are magnanimous leaders who genuinely want others to shine too. Watch for burnout and impulsiveness: the sun does not budget its fuel, so Bing can exhaust itself, speak before thinking, or mistake attention for substance.

Ding 丁 · Yin Fire — the candle flame

Focused light and sustained attention. Where Bing illuminates broadly, Ding illuminates deeply: the scholar's lamp, the craftsman's focus, the healer's steady presence. Ding people refine, nurture ideas, and care about getting the details right. At their best they produce work of unusual depth and warmth. Watch for overthinking and sensitivity: the small flame flickers in drafts, so Ding can ruminate, take things personally, or burn out quietly while appearing fine.

Wu 戊 · Yang Earth — the mountain

Mass, steadiness, holding capacity. Wu people are the ground others stand on: trustworthy, big-picture, unhurried, capable of carrying heavy responsibility without drama. At their best they are pillars — of families, teams, institutions. Watch for immobility: mountains do not pivot quickly, so Wu can be slow to change course, stubborn under criticism, or weighed down by everything it has agreed to carry.

Ji 己 · Yin Earth — the fertile field

Cultivation and practical nurture. Ji people make things grow through care and detail: gardens, projects, people, businesses. They are resourceful, observant, and gifted at turning small inputs into steady yields. At their best they are the quiet engine of every successful operation. Watch for worry and over-accommodation: the field absorbs everything, so Ji can accumulate stress, overthink, or say yes until depleted.

Geng 庚 · Yang Metal — raw ore, the axe

Decisive form and cutting clarity. Geng people are forged under pressure and value what survives it: justice, competence, results. They cut through confusion, decide quickly, and rebuild from zero without sentimentality. At their best they are formidable in crises — the person you want when things break. Watch for harshness: the axe does not distinguish, so Geng can wound allies, dismiss feelings, or mistake bluntness for honesty.

Xin 辛 · Yin Metal — the jewel, the fine blade

Precision, discernment, polished value. Xin people refine: they notice what others miss, hold high standards, and create beauty through exactness. Think surgeons, editors, designers, strategists. At their best they elevate everything they touch. Watch for perfectionism: the jewel is cut by removal, so Xin can become critical — of others and relentlessly of itself — or polish a plan long past the point of usefulness.

Ren 壬 · Yang Water — the ocean, the great river

Movement, scale, networks. Ren people flow around obstacles and connect distant shores: quick-minded, sociable, comfortable with complexity and change. They gather people, ideas and opportunities into moving systems. At their best they are visionary connectors who make big things fluid. Watch for scattering: water without banks floods, so Ren can overcommit, start more than it finishes, or overwhelm quieter people with sheer volume.

Gui 癸 · Yin Water — rain, dew, mist

Perception and subtle flow. Gui people understand before they act: intuitive, gentle, deeply observant, gifted at sensing what is unsaid. They nourish quietly and adapt precisely to whoever is in front of them. At their best they are wise counselors and delicate strategists. Watch for timidity and over-adaptation: mist has no shape of its own, so Gui can dissolve into others' agendas, avoid necessary confrontation, or worry in private while smiling in public.

The label is not the verdict

Two people sharing a Day Master can live very different charts. A Bing Fire born in summer rides its season; the same Bing born in winter must be read entirely differently. Roots in the branches, support from generating elements, pressure from controlling ones — all of this decides whether a temperament flourishes or strains. Our Five Elements guide explains why season and structure matter more than any single label, and the 15-minute reading guide shows how to weigh the whole picture.

A Day Master is a default strategy. The chart decides how well that strategy works.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Day Master?

It is the heavenly stem at the top of your day pillar. Use the free calculator — it labels your Day Master in English and Chinese in about 30 seconds.

Can my Day Master change over time?

No. It is fixed by your birth date. What changes are the luck cycles — decade and annual pillars — which interact with the same unchanging Day Master throughout life.

Which Day Master is the best?

None. Each has characteristic strengths and blind spots, and chart structure matters far more than the stem alone. A well-supported yin stem consistently outperforms a poorly placed yang one.

What is the difference between yang and yin Day Masters?

Yang stems express outwardly and broadly — visible, expansive, direct. Yin stems work through refinement and adaptation — focused, subtle, responsive. They are different strategies, not different ranks.

Does my Day Master decide relationship compatibility?

Only partially. Day Master interaction is one layer; serious compatibility compares whole charts, including elements, Ten Gods and timing. See our compatibility guide for the fuller picture.
